Celebration
CELEBRATION is a Fine Art Quilt inspired by the fireworks we watch from five surrounding communities above fields of corn from our front porch. This quilt began with tiny pieces of colored fabric fused onto a pieced-background of velvet and hand-dye fabric. Fireworks symbolize my freedom to be creative, to contemplate the nature of life, the beauty of nature, and the power to transcend tragedy. This quilt’s symbolism evolved when, two weeks after the towers fell in NYC, my brother Mike died in LA from complications of his service in Vietnam. In 2002, Celebration was accepted into the “Feel Free” International Quilt Competition in Barcelona, Spain and, along with the art of only one other American, and traveled the world for two years.
