Christmas Wishes

It’s Christmas Day and I want to wish you all a happy holiday and hope that you receive or find a way to achieve your deepest desire in the New Year.

Finally, all ready for Christmas. We even have a cat hiding under the tree!

I also want to apologize for being out of touch for the last month. Although I have an update on the rescue horses and my own Charlie almost finished, the completion was interrupted by holiday preparations: getting ready to host a Christmas party for the farm ladies (the Merry Martha’s Club has been meeting nearly every month for over a hundred years); preparing and shipping presents that I make for friends and family around the country; and lastly, I must confess, what I think is my own resistance to writing.

I was putting up the lights while the sun was setting and grabbed this picture.

Getting Stuck

I have discovered over the years that when I need time to process, my mind will shut down, making it nearly impossible to continue ongoing projects. It makes sense that this last month is one of those times because over the last year, I have received an abundance if valuable input for my writing.
—I’ve worked with a fabulous book coach, Erin Lindsay McCabe, one of many at Author Accelerator on two manuscripts.
—After getting less than ideal responses to my beginning queries to agents (form letter refusals), I signed up for another Author Accelerator tool, the Polish Your Pitch, and received some invaluable although somewhat disheartening feedback from seasoned coach, Julie Artz, on my Young Adult Novel, Rose Glass Horse. (I have to admit her advice is right on.)
—In September, I attended the Find Your Book, Find Your Mojo writers’ retreat in Winters Harbor Maine with Jennie Nash and team to work on restructuring my memoir Dance While the Fire Burns which has been resting in the drawer for a couple of years since I’ve been writing YA. What a fabulous event! Again, I received tons of ideas and supports giving me a strong sense of how to proceed.
—In October and November, I worked diligently on my webpage, merging two prior identities that were formed because I hadn’t been able to acquire my name’s URL. It’s been an experience learning WordPress and Elementor (a great text editor app) that will continue to require further work and education. Along with website, I sent two newsletters and began preparing a third, refreshing my Adobe Photoshop skills and adding a movie edited in the iMovie app (which also requires learning and relearning some production skills).

Sylvia is keeping a watch over me from her hiding place under the Christmas tree.

Decision Time

As you can see, I have a lot going on, and with the holiday rush, I decided I need to take a break to process it all. The burning questions is: What do I want?

So, I have decided to give myself the gift of time, a creative pause if you will, in order to process all of this invaluable input. I plan to spend lots of time with my horses, my dog Max, my four cats (two in the house and two new arrivals in the barn), and my husband Greg. In addition to being absorbed in some great television and movies and spending time in quiet contemplation, I hope to get lots of rest and to put more hours into organizing and purging my many creative workspaces in this big house. I hope to prioritize my projects and develop a plan to kickstart my creative efforts in the New Year.

I want to thank you for your patience while I pause. As I recently said to a few writer friends, “I’m all in, whatever I’m doing.” Right now, that’s regrouping and restarting. I hope you have whatever kind of holiday serves your needs, both spiritually and creatively, and I look forward to sharing our processes and new-found energies in the coming months.

MY HORSE FAMILY Once again, I have three horses grazing under the big oak tree.

Before closing, I just had to include a picture of the newly formed family of horses. (If you missed my story about Losing Sonia, you can read about it here.) This is Charlie (a bay with three white socks) with Mikey (the gray) and Gracie (another bay with only one white sock). They seem to be getting along great! I’ll have more about their journey soon, so watch your email inbox for my next update.

All my best,

Deborah
